Blank, stone grey walls surrounded a lightly padded floor. CORPSE was good about keeping their facilities clean and sterile, making sure to grind out any of the combat scars from the Walls. It kept new recruits hopeful that their training would go smoothly. Stone was chosen because it was one of the few materials that could withstand a Revenant fight. “Pointless” Karris stated, his voice dripping with sheer apathy. “You plan to break them, such as the Military does in Bootcamp. Why give them hope?” The sound of a grindstone sliding along a sword filled the air. Karris narrowed his eyes at the Instructor who seemed to ignore him. After a minute of the wretched noise, the Instructor looked up from his sword. “Preparation leads to arrogance and confidence. Not always, but in this case it would. Our men will almost never know what they’re fighting. Best they learn that from the start” The Instructor stated in a thick austrian accent. “I suppose you have a point, Vulture. Just make sure this one is not confined to the Infirmary for the next month. Snipe wishes to reserve him for an upcoming mission” “Investigator errands should be kept to sector one” Vulture stated with a hint of distaste. “We are not your bodyguards” “Perhaps not. I do not know why Snipe wants this kid on the mission, I’m just following orders” “Hmph” Vulture stabbed his sword half way into the ground, looking up at Karris with his remaining good eye. “Aren’t we all?”
Vulture held his hands behind his back in a pseudo-parade rest as the new recruit entered the sparring room. The young man was shorter than Vulture, by at least a foot. He certainly did not strike the average viewer as Sector 3 Material. “I will be your combat instructor and trainer for the remainder of your Training Process. You may refer to me as Sergeant Vulture, or Sergeant”. Vulture placed both hands on the pommel of his sword. “I wish to start off by asking what your skill level with the Sword is? I do not trust the reports, too many embellishments or modest comments. Be completely honest” Meilius Varkala

Meilius Varkala Silent Revenant Location: C.O.R.P.S.E. Training Grounds Tags: Sadbot The Corporation of Superatural Encounters, the blisteringly white walls of its corridors and the stern faces of hundreds of Revenants who passed by Meilius every single day, was still a difficult experience for the young spectral teen to comprehend. This experience was routine to them, but a Revenant as fresh as him still had a long way to go - hell, he hasn't yet come to terms with the fact that he is, in fact, a Revenant. Something unique, a race which even had a secretive organization to organize their rank and file with a mission at heart. How come he has never heard of CORPSE before? Surely, if Revenants such as him were so plentiful that they even had an army built out of them, they must have popped up among humans here and there... just like he had, briefly, before he joined the organization. The prospect of teaming up with his fellow Revenants in a quest to fight evil was exciting to the young, mute blonde, yet at the same time frightening. How many decades have his peers had to refine their Revenant abilities? After all, as far as he's been made aware, the spectral kind are essentially immortal and the passage of time does not affect them... Won't he just be a bother, a balast dragging his peers down with his weakness and inexperience? He signed up for Sector Three on a whim, only to see that he was pretty much a twig in comparison to the people he's been working with. These worries continued to linger in Meilius's head as he made his way to the spar he's been scheduled with a higher ranking officer, "Sergeant Vulture", as the mission log states. The blonde teenager stepped inside, seeing a stern, towering man, his glance clearly dismissive of the rather frail looking Revenant youth. Certainly didn't make him feel any better - despite that, Meilius did his best to craft a veil of discipline. His posture turned straight and his face struck a determined glare. A question flew his way immediately - what is the level of skill he had with his sword? His discipline broke immediately. Meilius turned his eyes to the side, scratched the back of his head, and tapped onto the handle of his weapon with his left hand. He shook his head, then pulled out a pen and a piece of paper from his pocket, where he started writing - after hastily putting down a few sentences, the teen turned the page around in order to display it to Sergeant Vulture: Some training, but not really great at it.
Report was correct.
Sorry.

Vulture narrowed his good eye at the note. After a pause, he’d straighten his back and look down at the recruit with no hint of sympathy. “If it was not for the lack of available recruits, you would have never been accepted into Sector 3. You are unable to effectively communicate with others, a detriment for any and all operations” Vulture turned his back to the recruit, walking to the far side of the sparring room. “That being said, I have seen men missing limbs defeat entire Legion squads. Rules and restrictions do not apply to Revenants as they do to humans. Draw your sword” Not a sound could be heard as Vulture drew his weapon from its sheath. It was an old Cavalry Saber, which despite its pristine upkeep could not hide its years of usage. The blade was around 82 Centimeters and straight. Vulture wielded it as if it was a part of him, an extension to his right arm. In one graceful stroke, he held it out to his side. The blade would erupt with fire, the man’s eyes following suit. “Do not hold back, you will not be able to kill me” Vulture stated simply. After making sure Meilius understood this, he would begin to step forward, his left hand behind his back and saber held forward. The man was completely calm and deliberate in his movements. He would stop just short of being within attacking range and remain still. How the recruit proceeded next would certainly say whether he was being honest about his skill or not. “When I was in the war, I saw children like you fight in wars they didn’t understand. They all had their own reasons, national pride, greed, escape, a sense of justice… Your reasons for fighting do not matter in a fight. They will not shield you from a sword or bullet. When you fight, you do so with the intention of defeating or killing the opponent. Your mind should remain on the fight, not what you are fighting for” Meilius VarkalaVULTURESUMMARY RANGE Long Medium Short * Close

Meilius Varkala Silent Revenant Location: C.O.R.P.S.E. Training Grounds Tags: Sadbot Captain Vulture was laconic and did not hold back even a single word - he instantly declared that Meilius was not fit into Sector 3 and his speech defect would hinder any and all operations he is a part of. He's not only a newbie and fresh to the world of Revenants, but stepped into this world with the callsign that he will be a bother to others. And now he had to throw his pathetic strength and pathetic weaknesses straight into an opponent more experienced and powerful than him, manifesting the power of flame and showering the entire room in light and heat... The mute Deogen's expression soured and his eyes trailed to the floor, his hair befalling upon his forehead and obscuring his pupils. While Captain Vulture tried to make up for his scathing remark by saying that a crippled Revenant warrior is not unheard of and that all he has to focus on right now is the battle ahead, without any hesitation, it did not make Meilius feel any better - he pulled out his sword with little apparent excitement. He could not give its name, but the one-handed, plain looking arming sword in his grasp the Spirit Blade, perhaps his only partner in this day and age. Suddenly, all of the pent up emotions burst. Meilius couldn't scream, but his mouth shot open as if he was trying to - and he suddenly lunged forward, all of his Deogen speed manifesting itself in one powerful charge. In the blink of an eye, he stopped just short of ramming into the flaming Captain - a twin set of determined purple eyes glared towards Vulture and a surge of Somnium energy built up within his veins. And then he suddenly struck, with inhuman force, sending two horizontal spin-slashes at the fellow Revenant. BATTLE TRACKERSUMMARY RANGE Long Medium Short Close *

Two loud clunks echoed through the oddly quiet training room. It would be followed by a crack, the sound of bones snapping. Vulture’s indifferent expression did not betray any pain he might have been experiencing. On the contrary, the man would begin to lean his weight into the clashed blade, leading to more cracking. “You hit strong. Emotional. You must focus on directing that emotion” He suddenly released the clash and stepped past Meilius. As he did so, he would attempt to draw the blade of his sword across the young recruit’s stomach, as if trying to slice him open. Vulture took another step forward and spun on his heels. Meilius was still close enough to strike, something the Instructor would take full advantage of. With a swift angling of his sword Vulture launched a single stab towards Meilius’ back. The fire wooshed around the blade, and would have been extinguished if not for it’s supernatural origin. Vulture pulled back before twisting the blade to deliver an upwards slash. “Deogen are naturally fast, but quite clumsy. Another reason why you should not be in Sector 3” He stated, as if listing reasons. “You have much to prove, much indeed. But…” He switched his sword to his left arm. “No man is born a warrior. Failure is to be expected of all. That is what training is meant for. Strike me again, guide it this time. My sword is a wall, you climb over the wall” VULTURESUMMARY Attack 1: Hit! 22 Damage - 10 Armor (Pierce) - 4 = 8 Damage Attack 2: Hit! 21 Damage - 10 Armor (Pierce) - 4 = 7 Damage Total Damage: 13

Meilius Varkala Silent Revenant Location: C.O.R.P.S.E. Training Grounds Tags: Sadbot Pushing through the heat emitted by the Captain's blade, striking against his frame with as much speed and energy as the teenager's body would allow, Meilius's sword finally found way and struck flesh. Bone cracked, flesh ripped, and the young Revenant's determined glare turned into fright. Has he done something wrong? Hurt someone? The Captain said that he shouldn't hesitate and fight as if his life depends on it, but... Meilius didn't think he actually meant those words, that it wasn't just simple motivation to get him fired up. Captain Vulture straightened and advanced, declaring that he should continue turning his emotions into power while apparently shrugging off all the pain which was clearly resonating within his body. Caught frightened and unprepared, Meilius had to rely on a bumbling, untrained instinct. His body cloaked itself with Deogen fob and his feet stepped away at superhuman speeds - stumbling back, he avoided a slash towards his stomach and turned around just in time to narrowly avoid a sword pierce aiming at his back. Finishing off his combination with a downwards slash, the Captain declared what was turning increasingly obvious for the young Revenant - the powers of a Deogen were completely unfit for Sector 3. He's just... listing and listing reasons why Meilius is a failure... and the teenager was starting to believe him. Maybe he should stand down and ask to be assigned elsewhere, investigation shouldn't be that bad... Vulture ordered him to try, however. The teen's flickering morale reinvigorated again. If the man wants him to try again and make up for his lack of everything, then... god damn, he is going to try. Meilius's hand clenched onto the grip of his sword tightly, Somnium energy pouring into his veins, building up within his flesh and muscles. Pushed by this vigor, he suddenly lunged forward, spinning in place to slash at the fiery Revenant's torso thrice, before finishing the combination off with a spirited descending strike. As to be expected Meilius was quite agile. While he admitted to little training, that could go quite a distance with Revenant enhancements. The recruit had an obvious handle on these abilities which was commendable. Not many take to their Revenance with such affinity starting out. Vulture could work with this. Meilius dove in for another barrage of strikes. The first was swatted to the side with the flat of Vulture’s saber. The second was not so easily avoided and dug into his flesh. His blade was sharp and well maintained given the ease at which it sliced through his protective gear. Meilius followed the strikes with a downward strike, which Vulture caught once more with his own blade. “You use the Somnium energy well. Your swordsmanship still requires work. There is more to fighting than striking wildly at a man. What if I was more powerful? Had faster reflexes? Actually wished to kill you…?” Vulture slid his blade across Meilius’ and stepped to the side. Several slashes would follow, but only four of them were intended to hit. Misdirection to open up the recruit to the strikes. The blue padding was soaked with blood from Vulture’s wound, but he seemed to care little as he stepped back from the attack. His long hair seemed to float softly in the air, as if the wind was carrying it. Embers floated to the ground softly. “In combat, you should use every advantage at your disposal. Your powers are great, and you use them like a natural. But you must always be prepared to fight without them. If you had hit me with the strength of a normal man, you would have broken your arm. Then, I would have broken your face. Do you understand?” Meilius VarkalaVULTURESUMMARY Attack 1: Attack 2: Hit! 16 Damage - 10 Armor (Pierce) - 4 = 2 Damage Attack 3: Attack 4: Hit! 22 Damage - 10 Armor (Pierce) - 4 = 8 Damage Total Damage: 13

Meilius Varkala Silent Revenant Location: C.O.R.P.S.E. Training Grounds Tags: Sadbot A series of slashes and strikes collided against one another in the span of a few seconds - with speed and a lot of spirit, Meilius managed to break through the Captain's defenses and cut into his flaming flesh. Blood dripped to the floor and a wound ripped open before his eyes - less shocking since he's done the exact same to Vulture a few seconds ago already... but, still, he gulped and diverted his eyes from the messy sight. The end of Meilius's combination saw the two warriors locked to a standstill, the blades of their swords ramming against one another, trying to push the other back. For the first time in the entire fight, the Captain had something to commend him for - as it turns out, he used "Somnium energy" well, and used his powers like a natural. The teenage Revenant didn't even know what it meant. He just fought on instinct... Of course, this compliment immediately came with strings attached. His strikes were strong, but lacked finesse, and the Captain asserted that he was only doing so well because he was in no risk of danger. What would he do if he fought against someone faster, stronger, and actually murderous. Meilius couldn't answer, but to explain what he meant, he furrowed his eyebrows and sent a determined glare to the Captain. That. That is what he'd do. Continuing to dictate his observations, the Captain attacked him again, sending a flurry of slashed Meilius's way - the young Revenant panicked immediately, trying to parry and deflect all of the strikes heading his way. He soon realized that not all of them were aiming to hit - some were so off the mark that he didn't even need to move to ignore them - but by the time he realized the nature of this feint, it was already too late. One strike left a deep cut across his arm, forcing Meilius to grit his teeth, and the other clocked him straight in the chest. It ripped through flesh and bone, leaving his left lung gaping open, and put an end to his resistance at last. The young Revenant collapsed to one knee and clutched onto his open wound. Blood, lots of it, running down his fingertips and dripping to the floor. A body desperately gaping for air and a vision slowly starting to turn blurry. Whe you're in a condition like this, how can you possibly hear Vulture's demand to understand him? BATTLE TRACKERSUMMARY RANGE Long Medium Short Close *

Vulture held his stance for a minute, observing Meilius as he fell to one knee. The strikes had managed to tear open the recruit’s chest, as well as leaving a deep gash on his arm. Painful injuries that were not unfamiliar to the instructor. Vulture slid his saber over his pant leg and sheathed the blade. He made no effort to help Meilius up. “You will be fine. Revenants do not require breath. Once your lungs fully heal, you’ll be coughing blood up for the next week or so” He said, staring down at the young recruit. “You will be injured greatly in this line of work. Gunshots, stabbings, explosions. They are painful at first, but you will learn to ignore the pain and fight on. You will have to if you wish to survive” He stepped forward and casually grabbed Meilius by the hair. With one quick yank, he pulled the recruit into the air in an attempt to straighten out his torso. “You will heal faster if you remain standing. Leaning will open the wounds faster than they can repair” Vulture turned his attention from Meilius to the Sparring room, observing the blood stains left behind. “I would give your swordsmanship a C. You yourself can be a great warrior, as most Revenants can. But once more I must reiterate: You lack finesse. Combat is not just slamming a sword or swinging wildly at a man. There are stances you must take, methods of cutting, even your edge alignment could use work. If you learn these things you could easily dismember a mortal” Vulture released his grip on Meilius’ hair and turned his back on him. “We will go over techniques which suit the Deogen and your sword of choice later. Go to your room and rest, most of the bleeding should be finished” Meilius Varkala

Meilius Varkala Silent Revenant Location: C.O.R.P.S.E. Training Grounds Tags: Sadbot Vulture was right - Revenants such as him and Meilius had no need for breath, cutting into his lungs was no different from any other wound. Old habits and instincts die hard, however, and his mind, still carrying seventeen years of mortal memory, had yet to forget that a gaping lung equates with an immediate loss of breath. Before Meilius could clench his teeth and stand back up, the Captain helpfully pulled him onto his hair and dragged him to a standing position. Compared to the searing pain running across his chest, the pain of having his hair tugged was pretty much nothing. With a brief description of his observations, Vulture gave Meilius a final ranking of his swordfighting skills. C. Great. So he's managed to upgrade himself from a failure who was only handed a weapon because the sector he's signed up for was lacking recruits to a drab and mediocre freshman who can only commended for having the same potential as everyone else. It was an improvement, perhaps... Meilius didn't really feel it. Released from Vulture's grasp, the young Revenant stumbled on the floor for a second or two, his weakened body struggling to remain upright, before finally managing to stabilize. He stared into the Captain's back, his left hand still clutching onto the searing wound and his right clenched into a tight fist. There were a lot of things he wanted to yell at his superior then and there. That he's not going to stay a C, no matter if he's young, inexperienced, frail, of an unfitting Revenant species, a cripple, and any other assorted list of things he embodies and Vulture sees as a flaw... And whether he does or doesn't, he's not going to be dismembering anyone. He's here to lend his hand to others, not cause even more death... All he could do was just... glare, however. And, finally, leave, with his thoughts bottled up in his mind.

Vulture did not bid farewell to Meilius, though he knew full well of the glares cast towards him. As the recruit exited, a tall, serious looking man in what seemed to be casual dress attire stepped past Meilius. He pushed his glasses up and waited for the young man to leave fully before turning his attention to Vulture. “You never said he was mute” Vulture stated with a hint of his true fury. “Do you expect him to write notes mid-combat?” “Mister Snipe simply wanted him for this mission. It would not have been possible without him entering either Sector 1 or Sector 3. He chose 3” “Are you not allowed to say no?” Vulture snapped back. “You know as well as I do that Snipe will do what he pleases” The man adjusted his collar. “How did he perform?” Vulture narrowed his eyes at the man and crossed his arms. “Adequate. I would have no reservations if not for him being a mute. You realize this means he will be unable to enter a squad, yes?” “That is none of your concern, Vulture. Snipe and Mordau are working on a solution as we speak. He will be placed on a mission with a new investigator and an EC. It should not require combat. After this mission he will continue his training” Vulture did not respond. “You seem quite adamant on keeping him out of combat. Will this be an issue?” “No. He just reminds me of someone. Too young to be going on missions” The man turned his back to Vulture and made his way to the door. “If you do not wish for him to die, I would recommend training him well. I will continue my observations until he is deemed suitable enough” “Karris,” Vulture stated before the man exited the room. He’d turn and glance back at Vulture. “Tell Snipe to go fuck himself. You can follow suit” “I’ll be sure to relay the information. Have a good day, Vulture” Meilius Varkala
