CHARACTER BIO
NAME: Kajiya Hogosha
AGE: 18 (Physically 16)
GENDER: Male
HEIGHT/WEIGHT: 5'11" 170 lbs
APPEARANCE:
Pre-Revenant:
Post-Revenant (Current Form):
GOALS:
Defying Nature: Kajiya's deep sense of regret revolving around the death of his younger brother during the robbery of his family store two years ago leaves the young teenager with an intense desire to break down the barriers between life and death, through his Spectre Magic. Out of grief over the permanent loss of the one person he loved unconditionally in the world, and guilt that he was the one to remain in the mortal realm and not his brother, Kajiya searches tirelessly for the secret to reanimation, his way of rewinding the hands of time and undoing the injustice of his brother's murder.
Idealistic Charity: Kajiya had always been a rather gentle soul, and the circumstances revolving around him being saved and recruited into CORPSE's ranks only served to deepen his own loyalty to them. To him, CORPSE is doing all they can to help Revenants like him, and protect the world from external threats that would only serve to disrupt the natural balance (how ironic, given the above goal). As a fresh recruit to CORPSE, Kajiya views his own service as his repayment for helping him work through his grief and pain, while showing him that he was not the only phantom fragment existing in the world. He hopes that through his contribution, he could one day grow to welcome new Revenants into CORPSE, and help them just as he was helped.
PERSONALITY:
["Um...Are you There?"]:A rather quiet child, Kajiya has been described as..."unsettling", to say the least. His shy nature, paired with a near dreamlike expression on his face at most hours of day have given him a reputation amongst his peers as being more "ghostlike" than most other Revenants, a designation that is not at all assisted by his appearance. His tendency to blend into the background and to daydream, even if in the middle of conversation, have only added to gossip about whether he had fully returned back to the human realm when he made his "return" from death.
["Wake up!"]: A true sloth by nature, Kajiya's brilliance and creativity is constantly squandered by a lack of desire to apply himself, only truly engaging in things that interest him, or that he's passionate about. Anything else? Well, his grades in school were rather poor due to constantly falling asleep in class, if that's any indication. If the subject doesn't interest Kajiya, he's bound to either lose interest, or fall asleep at some point during the proceedings. And god forbid such a task requires physical activity. Some people just don't have that drive...
["Hot Chocolate Addiction"]: Okay, this kid has a problem. CORPSE Representatives in charge of dealing with new CORPSE recruits quickly found out about Kajiya's hot chocolate fixation soon after picking him up off the streets a month after his "death". His request to have it with every meal and before he went to bed every day was honestly only granted for more than a month was purely out of pity, and the kindness of his therapist and overseer, Mrs. Lane. Nevertheless, Kajiya cannot go a day without the heated sweet drink, and while not as dramatic an addiction as hard core drugs, Kajiya has been known to get noticeably cranky if he goes more than three days without at least one mug.
["Artistic Passion"]: Before Kajiya's "death", he had wanted to grow up to be a painter. Discovering his love and natural talent for art in the first grade, the boy's love grew into a deep passion for painting, and quickly became engrossed in the varying styles of it, winning an award upon his entrance into Secondary School for his rather captivating use of Fauvism within his art, titled "Fox" (one could only speculate what it's about, huh?). Nevertheless, Kajiya's artistic passion carried on into his post-Revenant days, although he has become increasingly more private about it, innocently doodling in a sketchbook of his in his offtime, and only dedicating himself to painting on rare occasions...and never for public view.
FAMILIAL AND PERSONAL CONNECTIONS:
Sakurai Hogosha: Kajiya's mother, and co-owner of the "Wild Pearl" Jewelry Shop in Kyoto, Japan. A kind, gentle woman of great talent as a crafter and jeweler, Sakurai was one of the first supporters of Kajiya's artistic talents, taking up the brush herself when he showed his natural aptitude for it, and investing a great deal in art supplies for him to hone his talent. Her encouragement of him often brought her at odds with her stubborn husband, Akira, who insisted upon Kajiya taking over the family business. Sacked with Akira's distant nature, Sakurai served as the bridge between her children and their father, keeping the strained family together as much as she could, while maintaining the family business. Thus, it truly ruined her the night of the tragic robbery upon the store, which resulted in the murder of Kajiya and Zane (although not Kajiya's "true" death). Racked with grief and sorrow, she reacted erratically to her oldest son's return, throwing him out of the house and viewing his ghostly return as nothing more than a "demon", returning to torture her further after taking "all she had".
Akira Hogosha: Kajiya's father and the other co-owner of the "Wild Pearl" Jewelry Shop, Akira's relationship with Kajiya and Zane was always....strained, to say the least. A crafter and jeweler by trade as well, Akira was always more invested in the more business-like aspects of their shop, and found himself consistently fussing about sales, and who was going to take over the family business after the retirement of himself and Sakurai. As such, he placed a great deal of pressure on Kajiya to give up his passion as a painter to become a jeweler and run the family business, saying it was his duty as the oldest Hogosha son, creating a rift between him and Kajiya. To that effect, his fixation on Kajiya and his obsession over the family business caused him to ignore Zane as well, for as the youngest there was no place for him in the business, especially given his young age. Like Sakurai, after the death of Zane and the "death" of Kajiya, the Hogosha family rejected Kajiya's Revenant status and threw him out of the house, viewing him as nothing more than a demon coming back to haunt them. To this day, the Hogosha family acts as if both of their sons were killed the night of the robbery.
Zane Hogosha: Kajiya's younger brother of eight years, Zane was born the youngest child of the Hogosha family, and thus was not bound to inherit the family business. An outgoing and happy child, Kajiya and Zane became rather close rather swiftly, with Kajiya viewing it as his job to protect his younger brother, and act almost like the father that Zane never got to truly see and spend time with. Not even a week after Zane's eighth birthday, Zane was caught in the crossfire of a robbery gone horribly wrong, in which he was shot in the heart shortly before Kajiya suffered a similar injury. Zane was pronounced dead upon arrival to the nearest hospital. Unlike Kajiya, Zane did not become a Revenant, and his soul safely moved into the Afterlife.
Mrs. Lauryn Lane: Kajiya's therapist and "Overseer" during his initial rehabilitation. Mrs. Lane (Dr. Lane to most others) was the woman assigned to care for Kajiya and oversee his transition from life on the streets to life within CORPSE, as well as to attempt to ease the boy's grief and sorrow over the loss of his brother, and his exile from his family. Through their year and a half of working together, Kajiya and Lane's connection to each other had grown far past the simple client-therapist relationship, in which Lane's kindness and care for him inspired him to join CORPSE as an officer to do the same for other people. To Kajiya, he views Mrs. Lane almost like a second mother.
REVENANT TYPE: Banshee-Type Revenent
PRE-REVENANT:
Born eighteen years ago in Kyoto, Japan, Kajiya was born into the Hogosha Family, a family of high middle class jewelers, whose store had been passed down through several generations, with Akira Hogosha inheriting the family store a bit more than a decade ago, along with his wife, Sakurai. Per family tradition, it was "mandated" that the eldest son inherit the family store, along with everything that comes with it. Any other child past that male successor is free to pursue whatever career path they wish, but at the same time they are guaranteed to have very little in the way of inheritance, compared to the eldest son. A double edged sword, if you will. However, Kajiya's blatant refusal to carry on the family business as early as seven years old struck a great deal of discord within the family, as Kajiya wished to pursue a career as a professional painter, and while Sakurai was encouraging of her son's passions, she was not one to step on Akira's toes, and break family tradition either, allowing her husband to attempt to force his son into complying with his wishes, often with disastrous consequences. The likes of such a relationship between father and son put immense strain on the family as a whole, as Akira grew more distant from his wife and son, focusing more on the family business than with his family, and Kajiya's grades in school began to slip due to his lack of interest in performing well (and also as a subtle way of getting vengeance on his father, who was also obsessed about his son's grades, even in early Grade School).
Kajiya's mood increased dramatically, however, when his younger brother, Zane, was born. The responsibility of being an older brother, as well as the innocence of the infant, brought upon an instant connection between himself and Zane, a relationship that only strengthened as both boys grew older. Taking his role as the older brother seriously, Kajiya made it his business to give him the attention that their distant father failed to do, working closely with his mother to take care of Zane, all the while allowing his grades to constantly dip, while focusing solely on his art, earning recognition in school for his advanced and jaw dropping work, while receiving nothing but disapproval from his parents upon bringing home the next report card.
Such a dynamic continued well into Kajiya's secondary school years, although by that point he had given into his father (to a degree, mind you) and agreed to shadow his work and help around the shop at the end of his fourteenth year, assisting his parents in his work, while spending time with Zane in his off time. Due to working closely with his father, he finally began to formulate an amicable relationship with him, going into Kajiya's fifteenth year, the man taking the time to actually listen to his son's passions, and see his artwork for something more than just a distraction, yet only after Kajiya had agreed to shadow him, of course. Nevertheless, Kajiya's relationship with his father had, after more than eight years of animosity, finally begun to improve.
Then, it all came crashing down.
Less than a week after Zane's eighth birthday, Kajiya was sixteen by that point, and well acquainted with the workings of the store, enough to close up shop at the end, due to his parents going out for a date night, just the two of them. Zane was sitting on the countertop while Kajiya was seconds away from putting the money earned that night in the safe when a lone, armed robber broke into the store, trying to raid the jewelry in the store, as well as the money in the safe. Alarmed by the sudden threat, and worried for Zane's safety, Kajiya reached under the counter to get his dad's pistol, kept hidden for moments such as that one. As Kajiya revealed the pistol and dived to the left to try and clear the scrambling and frightened Zane from the counter, the gunman panicked and shot wildly towards the two boys, and got Zane right in the heart before Kajiya could get to him, knocking the boy back. Screaming out in anguish, Kajiya attempted to shoot back at the gunman, but inexperience from wielding a weapon, paired with pure panic allowed for the gunman to strike again, shooting Kajiya in the chest, causing him to fall to the ground, releasing his weapon without even having a chance to avenge his fallen brother.
Not intending for a simple robbery to turn into a bloodbath, the robber took off running without so much as even touching any of the jewelry. By the time Akira and Sakurai returned home minutes later, they found their shop windows in pieces and the two boys bleeding on the ground, with Zane not breathing. Within moments, the ambulance and police had arrived at the scene, rushing the boys to the nearest hospital, yet it was too late for one of them. Zane was pronounced dead on arrival, with Kajiya in critical condition. Kajiya was soon to follow however, for his life signs faded the next day, after hours of trying to stabilize him on life support. Kajiya was pronounced dead as well.
POST REVENANCE
Normally, this story would end right here, right? But this isn't a normal story. Kajiya cannot recall anything about his period of death. To him, everything after being shot was just darkness. Pure black. The curtains were drawn, and he was unfeeling. Unaware of anything and everything around him. Then...he just woke up. But he woke up differently. Gasping back into reality, Kajiya found himself rising with a new...weightlessness, that he had never before felt.
And then he cried. He could barely speak. It was almost as if the floodgates had opened, and everything had finally begun to sink in. His parents could only watch, shocked as they came into the room the following morning to find their deceased son alive, his skin white as a ghost, with hair to match, and his eyes a permanent red. He was a Revenant. And as he threw his head back, his wail shook the very room. It was a cry of anguish. For even though he couldn't have known about his brother's death, for he wasn't conscious when the official declaration was announced....he just knew.
And he could never, ever forget his failure.
The next few months following his "return" from the Afterlife were quite chaotic. Not long after his release from the hospital, his parents, horrified by his transformation and acting off grief, threw him out of the house, claiming that he was "not their son", and that he was simply a "demon sent to torture them". From then on, Kajiya wandered the streets, far from his parents' shop, trying to carve out a new life for himself. Or rather, trying not to actively commit suicide (Author's Note: Committing suicide while dancing between life and death is rather difficult). However, it was four months after his banishment from his family that he was discovered by CORPSE Agents assigned to the region that he was passing through, who took him in as a lost Revenant child. Within the care of CORPSE, he was assigned to Dr. Lauryn Lane, who was meant to aid in his adjustment, and in providing the boy with appropriate therapy given his frazzled mental state. It was with Mrs. Lane that Kajiya was able to fully divulge into his chaotic family life, and speak of how he felt like he "failed" his brother. Her kindness, and dedication to helping him recover fully from the pain of his past was refreshing, and motivated Kajiya to join CORPSE as an Investigator. His way of not only helping other Revenants in a similar manner to how he was helped, but as his "thank you" to Mrs. Lane for being his rock during the lowest point in his life. While today, he has improved much from what he was two years ago, he still has far to go to be considered "fully adjusted".
CORPSE EMPLOYMENT
Within CORPSE, Kajiya's aptitude tests proved that his transformation had awakened a suppressed penchant for magic, and he quickly became a natural learner of the Arcane, his studies of various spellbooks and Grimoires only adding to his mystical specializations. However, his school grades, due to his rebellion against his father and his disinterest in academics, proved much too low for any consideration as to his entrance into Sector 2 of CORPSE. However, due to Kajiya's high performance tests and high intelligence rating, as well as his prodigal skill in magic, he was deemed eligible for admittance into Sector 1 as a new recruit, filing for work as an Investigator and Spectral Magic Specialist.
