Lan Shifted uncomfortable, fitted up as he was in his form-fitting assassination outfit. As usual, he was doing an assingment for Sector 1 completely unfitting for him, simply because he happened to be a human they had lying around. CORPSE needed funding - not due to any recent crisis, it was just the simple matter of fact that it always, and some of this came from military and private backers. While there was no beans about the need for CORPSE's existence, plenty of them would like to cherry pick and cut unnecessary expenses and problematic costs. One of the things that had been a problem for CORPSE since the dawn of the automatic weapon was the simple question regarding Revenants: Mainly, how effective were they really? Were they worth the costs and risks associated, the obnoxious work that went into recruiting them? Couldn't we take more ordinary soldiers on, now that technology has outstripped their worth, and simply outfit soldiers with gear that would let them do the same job without the same... eccentricities? It happened every few decades that this attitude would show up, when humans had made a few major advancements that left them thinking, once again, as the top of the world with the might of their technology. So it was that Lan was thrust into some large arena with a viewing box, about to waste time and ammo with what they expected of... Wait Lan checked the knife they gave him.... This was just his knife! Was this going to be live-fire?! What if the other guy got real stuff too? "Over here, Lan Cameo. A professional soldier with 85 kills to his name and the nickname of "The crusher"." "Hey wait a tick-" The blue-haired hitman protested. he was certainly not a soldier, his kill-count was still only 43, and - the crusher? Seriously? Lan might be slightly resentful of his own short size, but he wasn't about to actually deny the fact he didn't look like he could crush a pop-can with a hammer. What kind of ridiculous hype-show was this? "In the other, one of our newer revenants. both have been thoroughly briefed on this live-fire exercise and will be fighting as though to kill..." What? He hadn't even been promised hazard pay? What was this! The blueette opened his mouth to protest the whole situation, but his quiet 'excuse me' was lost under the announcer's very loud "BEGIN!" Meilius Varkala Silent Revenant Location: CORPSE Sector I Tags: lan Another day, another sparring session. He didn't know if the leadership of Sector III hated him more than they usually do, but they've been sending Meilius to prove himself in staged matches against opponents from various sectors over and over. Today was no different. With the Spirit Blade attached to his belt and a stern, blank expression on his face, Meilius stepped into the arena, taking a few breaths to collect himself and mentally prepare himself for the match. The man on the other side was a somewhat feminine looking blue-head, who had started panicking before the match even began while checking his weapons and hearing the way he's been introduced. Like a contagious disease, the panic set in Meilius's mind as well, when he heard that he will be required to fight this man like he is aiming to kill. When was that in the briefing? Maybe he misheard something... Meilius flailed his hands a little, to try to express that he wasn't trying to kill anyone, before finally stopping and breaking back into his faux discipline. He sighed, scratched the back of his head and pulled out his Spirit Blade. The one-handed arming sword glimmered in the bright spotlight of the arena as the Revenant slowly advanced forward - maintaining his distance for now, however, in case Lan had something up his sleeve which he had yet to be made aware of. Lan froze as he saw the other enemy casting actual magic in preparation for the duel. This wasn't some simple demonstration or exercise - they were serious about them fighting eachother! If this little demonstration got out of hand, they might kill... They might kill... Kill... The Cameo's face suddenly, in the blink of an eye, shifted from nervous and sweaty to smooth. a gentle, pleasing grin plastered over his face. Not a slasher smile, or a grin of excitement, but the grin an old schoolteacher might give to their students when they came in from the bell. Polite. disarming. The Assassin walked forward with the slightest of springs in his steps. casually. As though they were simply walking to work in no particular hurry. The walk of someone completely content with their lot in life. It almost seemed out of place that the blue-haired youth wouldn't be humming on this stroll... Until, after a couple seconds of this, the young assassin struck, having crossed the distance with a deceptive speed and striking with sudden speed for his opponent's shoulder. "...Sorry." The blue-ette added with a perfectly calm tone. "But it looks like we both have to do this." and with that, a trio of sword-strikes followed his words, aimed for his opponent's weakspots from every angle as Lan tested his prey's defenses. Meilius Varkala Silent Revenant Location: CORPSE Sector I Tags: lan This 'Lan Cameo', so-called "The Crusher", did not seem to live up to the reputation he's got listed since the beginning of the fight from the way he looked. A small, blue-haired youth not that much older than Meilius, who didn't look like he could threaten a kitten - and you were supposed to believe that he's assassinated almost a hundred people in cold blood? That couldn't be it... Until, suddenly, Lan struck. His blitz saw the two young swordsmen stare face to face in a flash, and before Meilius could react, the assassin's blade lunged straight into his shoulder. It easily found its way, impaling the Revenant's flesh, allowing blood to spray out and instantly freezing Meilius's movements in sheer agony. If it had struck in a place any more vital, and if he were not immortal... he'd be a corpse already. Lan did not look any different, he was his same short, fragile looking self - his face was now dead serious and perfectly calm, his words assuring that he only did this out of necessity. Any doubt in Meilius's mind got cleared out instantly. It's only been a few seconds and he's already crumbling, bleeding out and weakened. What a cruel joke... Meilius's swordwielding hand moved out of instinct, striking back at Lan's following slashes with increasing defiance. His second strike got blocked outright, and his third one faced a spirited parry, slowing down the presure of the attack until finally stopping it centimeters away from the blonde Revenant's nose. It was a struggle to even move his arm with his shoulder out of commission, much less attack or defend. But, by God, was he going to try. Pushing Lan's blade to the side, Meilius lunged forth, a flood of Somnium energy rushing down his veins and reinvigorating him. Unlike his opponent's precise strikes towards his weak points, the Revenant's fighting style was far more simple - swing against his enemy with all of the force his body allows until something breaks, either the blue-head or his own wrist. The assassin was completely in a world of his own as he fought his opponent, the light fading and things that weren't either his target or his target's words melting away and disappearing under his gaze. He was brought back to reality by the wicked speed of the blade that nearly dug directly into his skin, bringing his short blade to block it only for the parry to be violently denied by the sledgehammer that was the Revenant's pure strength. The knife stopped what could have been a hefty hit to the assassin's side, but the blade was redirected just as Lan twirled... leaving a thick red trail across his backside that cut through the assassin's belt. The Assassin would have been completely red in the face from this turn of events, if not for the combination of his own focus on eliminating his opponent - and the sheer pain of the attack causing him to bite down hard to prevent himself from crying out in pain. Luckily, he'd turned around just in time, and an electrical sizzle accompanied his turn-around: From wired copper discharged the wrath of some pagan thunder god, as Lan fired Prima's last present at his new opponent: A special-issue, uniquely designed, anti-revenant Tazer, directly for the opponent's chest. The energy placed within was meant to specifically vibrate against a revenant's body signature, making movement more awkward - and thus, the opponent to expose more weak points. Also, it was still a tazer. Zap zap. The Assassin knew that a cut of the level he got, however, was more than enough to do a lot of damage to the little assassin, even if it was on the ass. So then, time to go on the counter- attack. all or nothing - but that was always the standards for assassination, so as Lan disappeared from view, leaving the tazer caught in his opponent, he sliced with full confidence, aiming for several weakpoints and hoping to capitalize and leave his opponent unable to continue fighting. If he could do it, well, he could do it. If he couldn't... That was something he'd have to handle later. For now, it was time to reap. BATTLE TRACKERSUMMARY RANGE Long Medium Short Close *

Meilius Varkala Silent Revenant Location: CORPSE Sector I Tags: lan Meilius swung each and every sword strike with greater and greater ferocity, his eyes glaring at Lan with unbridled determination. Only once, however, did his blade manage to make its way to the blue-haired assassin's flesh. In an instant, his movements slowed somewhat - the Revenant was determined to win, but the sight of blood running from Lan's open wound was far from an easy sight to swallow. It served as an immediate reminder that all of the grit and determination he pulls to try to push himself with will always have to find a compromise with... well, causing harm. Whether or not Lan was aware of it, this was the perfect moment for him to strike, and before Meilius was even aware of it, a powerful burst of electricity slammed into his gut and soared through his muscles. The Revenant lunged back, his face contorted, trying to yell out of instinct even if he could not mutter a single yelp. Not only was his shoulder still out of commission, his body was tased and nearly paralyzed as well... He still tried to resist, however. Backing away, trying to weave out of Lan's relentless slashes. One strike slashed into his upper arm, leaving a wide, open wound running across. A second one aimed straight for Meilius's chest, too fast to dodge, too powerful to block, and, for the average person, undoubtedly deadly. Meilius tried resisting anyway, parrying the incoming blade with his arming sword, only for his futile resistance to finally break and several inches of steel embed itself into his heart. It wasn't lethal - for a Revenant. But it still hurt like hell. Meilius collapsed to one knee, his sword falling to the floor of the arena with a loud clank and his hand clutching onto his chest, blood collecting within his fingertips and dripping to the ground. Pure focus. investigating the revenant's vitals. Heartrate seemed fast, chest heaving. Muscles spasming and blood pooling up at an accelerated rate. instant death, for a human. Merely a lot of trouble, for a Revenant.
The assassin took deep breath after deep breath as he fought actively to suppress, to bring himself back again. The small assassin's every instinct screamed at him to finish off his target, but he held firm as he pushed himself to remember - not a target. Just a sparring partner.
Lan pushed through that last mental wall and came out the other side feeling like he'd just been splashed with cold water. Immediately, as his world returned to normal, he realized a few things about what was going on.
Firstly, far from the laughter he'd have expected from high society... there was just silence.
Looking up to the observation window, Lan realized he'd been had. There were no corporate bigwigs or rich enterpreneurs here. he'd read enough dossiers, with or without permission, to recognize that every member there was a part of section 3.
The looks varied from calm analysis to flat-out shock. Lan... wasn't supposed to win this one, he supposed.
He decided he didn't care about that, as he fought against frustrated tears. was this all some joke by the combat arm of the sector? It didn't matter.
Dropping his sword, he marched up to Meilius with exaggerated stomping he channeled his frustration through - which still ended up being very light footfalls at the small man's size... before flashing a very nervous smile, the beginnings of tears in his eyes. "...I-I'm... really sorry about this. If I'd k-known it was... My name is Lan. I know y-you might not wanna t-talk to me right now, but if you'd... like h-help up, I could help you to the m-medcenter. I, uhhh... know a shortcut."

Meilius Varkala Silent Revenant Location: CORPSE Sector I Tags: lan With the conclusion of the match, the lights above the arena slowly began to pop open one after the other. While the air remained silent, some commotion could be heard from inside the viewbox - to see a human defeat a Revenant so easily, essentially with a single assassination proceduce, was far from a common sight to see. The searing pain of Meilius's wounds was simply not going away. He knew that he wasn't going to die - Vulture informed him as much the last time he got pierced through his chest already - but it didn't stop his human instincts from acting up in fear that he was at the last inch of his life. Mark this down as one more person he's humiliated himself before... surely, Lan was already walking away with a smile on their face, or a dismissive frown, carrying disappointment in their mind that this nobody shriveled up against them so easily and thus merely wasted their time... No doubt, he was going to be reprimanded by Vulture for his poor form, told again that he was only a member of Sector 3 because of a mistake, and, no doubt, he was simply going to ignore all of that again. He's got the time to prove everyone wrong. Meilius weakly raised his eyes, the sight which unfolded before him leaving him... surprised. Lan wasn't gone - quite the opposite, the young blue-haired man tossed his bloodied sword to the floor and began walking up to Meilius. He wasn't happy, or confident, or even disappointed. Lan might have tried to hide how he felt with a weak smile, but the little glints collecting around his eyes betrayed what really was amiss. Was he... feeling distraught? Absolutely. The man began to plead about how he never wanted to wound Meilius to this point, and offered to help. Meilius acted without hesitation. Suddenly, the blonde Revenant stood up, cracked a toothy smile, and placed his hands on his hips to display that he was completely fine. It did not make his wounds bleed any less or their pain burn any lesser - if anything, the sudden movement made it all worse. But that doesn't matter when the other alternative was to make Lan feel terrible. Meilius nodded to Lan's offer to take him to a med-center, then reached into his pocket to pull out a pre-written card. Nice to meet you, I'm Meilius!

"O... oh!" The Cameo stammered, as the blonde got up. The smiling blonde put a very nervous smile on Lan's face as he saw him go from beaten to happy like that. He supposed it made sense - He was a revenant, after all - but the movement still surprised Lan every time he saw it.
As he read the card, Lan would give a soft smile, before offering his soft, small hand. "...Let me help you there, then. Don't worry... I'm stronger than I look." He'd offer with a big smile. "...It's okay if you can't talk. I learned sign language when I was younger. one of the essential skills for assassination, Cousin Prima taught me, was that you needed to understand your target..."
And at that, the Blue-haired killer would turn a faint pink as he realized just how long he'd been rambling. "...s-orry, I-I'm rambling, aren't I? L-let's get you t-to m-medical care." The hitman offered, looking down closer to his feet again as he guided them towards the nearest medstation they can get to. "I-if we, uhm, can't g-get you to a doctor immediately, I, uhm, c-can apply some f-first aid. I'm a t-trained medic, and all, so... S-so I c-can apply some first aid." The assassin stammered, inwardly kicking himself. This was the first guy he'd met that had acted at all nice to him - and after he'd stabbed him in the chest - and here he was. blowing it. Good work, Lan.

Meilius Varkala Silent Revenant Location: CORPSE Sector I Tags: lan Everything was in pain, Meilius was sure that if he were still mortal, then he would have long since blacked out from blood loss. But he stood calm and firm while Lan rambled under his breath, explaining that he knew sign language as a part of his assassin training and offering to help the Revenant up. Even if he really wanted to show that he was fine, Meilius did not resist being helped up and followed after Lan towards the medical station. Of course, the blue-haired assassin turned more and more flustered and indecisive - now, he wanted to get the two of them to a halt and apply first aid care to Meilius so he wouldn't be bleeding out on the spot. Compared to his cold and calculating behavior during their battle, this was... a complete change of pace. Lan really wasn't good at talking to people, was he? It's certainly not the fact that he left Meilius a bleeding mess, he should be used to murder by now... Meilius leaned on Lan's shoulder to prop himself up. Right, so, if he can speak sign language, this should make communication a bit easier... The mute Revenant's right hand began forming various signs in quick succession to "speak" a sentence. Thanks. Just get me to the station.
